This piece is very non-canon, and I shan’t begin to enumerate its various shortcomings, or there would be no end to the description. For a long time I’ve had the idea of using the four riders of the Apocalypse (War, Death, Pestilence and Famine) for motives, ideally a series of images. Here I have taken the artistic liberty of imagining Pestilence as a female character. I tried my hand with the riders for months, but starting off I did not have much practice in drawing horses – not to mention horses with properly positioned riders. That of course rendered this particular choice of motive a bit troublesome. Thus, for now, I've laid aside the notion of doing a series of motives centring on the riders of the Apocalypse, until my artistic skills match the subject matter somewhat better. But here, at least, is what I managed to do so far: Pestilence in the shape of a female rider, spreading the seeds of plague. On an at least credible looking horse. Laugh as you may!

For a more recent take on Pestilence, now as a rat rider, have a look at this picture in my gallery.

Hey a new piece! Sorry for the late visit! (Case studies, term papers and all that...) Good to see you're still updating! 10

Well here are my suggestions. Besides the horse's proportions (which I know you already know...) you should have given Plauge a swarm of locusts or something that would reflect her theme. I 'will' be waiting for the other riders so you better start working! 1

I know you've already seen the shortcomings of this picture but nevertheless it still came out as a great Helle piece!

:-) Helle Jorgensen replies: "I know, I know: I also arrived at the thought that I should have included more thematic elements. I've even played with the idea of making her ride a rat instead of a horse, being surrounded by clouds of lice and fleas - to fit with the nature of the spread of plague. (I don't know about locusts though ... would you have her kill all first-born sons too? That's another story altogether, if I remember correctly, but then - you're the expert 12 I have a nasty suspicion that swarms of insects would be difficult to pull off in detail, though. Hmm. As for the other riders - in my mind's eye I know exactly how they ought to look, but as for getting them out on paper ...10. So I'll relieve the suspense: My next update will not relate to the Apocalypse. But perhaps, some time or later..."

Wosh! I like the horse! ^___^ he looks like from a horror movie. ^__~ no offense...
Nice work yet again

:-) Helle Jorgensen replies: "Thanks for coming back to my gallery! I did my best to make the horse look scary, so I'm glad that it shows. (It should perhaps have been somewhat larger in proportion to her, but anyway, with no references and no practice whatsoever in drawing horses it came out acceptably. Perhaps I'll submit an updated version one day.) "

Everything but the face is perfect. The face looks like my grandpa. (I'm sure you already knew this, tho)

:-) Helle Jorgensen replies: "Ha ha! Well, I haven't had the pleasure of meeting your grandpa, or at least if I have I wouldn't have been aware of the connection. Even so, I think I can see what you're aiming at, so thanks for taking the time to comment! You're very kind in declaring everything else in the image perfect. Perhaps somewhat too kind, though I appreciate it: I can assure you that I see plenty of artistic blunders in it."

I think the idea is great, and the picture is not that bad at all! It shows the soul of the theme well!
As for horses..I tried to draw them for years, it is difficult, but don`t give up on them! They usually is worth the effort!

:-) Helle Jorgensen replies: "Well, for a first try at depicting a horse with rider it is fairly tolerable, but it's not the best drawing I've ever made, I must admit. But I think the idea itself has great potential. If I ever make a second try at the motive I would like to include plague carriers such as rats and lice, but even the thought of depicting hordes of vermin make me avoid the topic - imagine the details that'd have to go in it ... arrgh!"

Or maybe you could have her riding a shape-shifting cloud of insects that's in a sort of ratty-shape. But then, I'm a writer, not a drawer. 1

:-) Helle Jorgensen replies: "Yeshh, that's an interesting idea, but as to how I could execute it, heaven only knows. Sounds a bit difficult! - That's the benefit of being a writer rather than drawing, I suppose ... words may be a bit more compliant with the artist than graphics, because writing means less likelyhood of clumsy fingers mucking up the idea along the process from thought to paper."

So, you did it! >=)
I only wish you correct Plague’s hand(it’s a bit long, you see). Otherwise this picture is not that bad! =))
Well, perhaps I’ll make my own Riders one day. Rat instead of horse, you say? Hmm… >_>

:-) Helle Jorgensen replies: "Well yes, I did. I'm not entirely happy with this one, though, but it may be a while before I try my hand with it again. 'Hand'! Hm, that's the second image in my gallery where a character's hand is judged to be too long. It must be some sort of curse! Ahhaah! And I didn't even realise. You, on the other hand (no pun intended, but there you go) *should* have a go at depicting the four horsemen of the Apocalypse. Or, ehh, horse'persons', I suppose, if you go by my example. Ratpersons, even. Yes: Definetely rat! Please - I'd love to see what you could make of it!"

nice, i like the horse1

:-) Helle Jorgensen replies: "Thanks! I must admit that I didn’t have much practice drawing horses when I did this one 12"

cool - scary tho, the sketchy look gives it so much life and movement!
i love the horse’s tucked up legs, mid-stride - quite sweet really 12

:-) Helle Jorgensen replies: "Thanks. I really think that I ought to do a renewed version of this one some day. There are a number of details which strike me as subjects of improvement, but I’m glad that you like the picture as it is."
