A little experiment. While this is intended to look like an old woodcut, it is in fact a sketch done in watersoluble sketching pencils, and then digitally manipulated by use of Photoshop.

This is my version of Pestilence, one of the four riders of the Apocalypse. In Danish, Pestilence literally goes by the name of Plague. Thus, since plague was historically spread by rats, I thought that it would be in theme for the character to ride a rat rather than the traditional horse. And while I was at it, I made Pestilence a female, just for the sake of diversity. That's artistic license for you. With her right hand she is spreading the seeds of plague in the shape of an ominous cloud.

In preparation for this piece I've looked up a number of photos of rats to get a better grip on the anatomy, but the pose is done all according to my own ideas, since it needed to fit with the rat having a rider.

If it should strike anybody's fancy, you can also find an older drawing of Pestilence/Plague in my gallery, in which she is depicted as a horsewoman.

So, you finally did it! I must admit, the rat is excellent. The woodcut effect is also nice. I only wish to see more.. um.. details. Like, face expression, etc.

:-) Helle Jorgensen replies: "I agree; in this case it is definetely the rat that makes the picture, and I'm quite happy with the way it came out. The linework on the original skecth was somewhat more detailed, but not very carefully done, and only the coarser lines stand out in this digitally adjusted version. I thought it might be a bit boring if I displayed both versions of the picture in my gallery. Thus I uploaded the one where I had used Photoshop. I've just gotten the program, and I needed an excuse to play with my new toy."

Brilliant. Great job getting it to look like a carving. The rat looks awesome.

:-) Helle Jorgensen replies: "Thanks! I’m quite happy with the way the rat came out myself. I should get around to do more with Photoshop though. Thanks for the comment, as well as for tagging my gallery. I hope to see your stuff when the ongoing overhaul of Elfwood allows for updates again!"
