Is it your very first watercolored picture? The technique is really good for the first attempt! I really can see that on the close-up. May I ask what kind of paper did you use?
Ahh… I do believe the mermaid would look natural sitting on the rock, not just leaning upon it. But perhaps she’s just jumping out of the water… 2

:-) Helle Jorgensen replies: "Well, I think I had some cheap study watercolours as a kid, but since then I haven't been using watercolours for years and years. I think this is a pretty good start. I've been reading some books on watercoloring techniques over the summer, and that might have helped. The paper was something I got at an art supply store; it doesn't have a spiffy brand name or any details on weight and coarseness. It's probably meant for general artistic purposes as much as for watercolours. I just saw it and liked the feel of it; it's slighty thicker than ordinary office paper, a little bit darker, and with a slighty coarser structure. It wasn't expensive, so it appears to be good value for the money."

Well... for your first water color in years, this would be a pretty good start. When I use traditional mediums, the only fantasy creatures I can draw are living jellys and blobs.

Good to see that you didn't over-saturate this close up. 1

:-) Helle Jorgensen replies: "Oh, yes, I'm happy enough with this one, but then I had some good advice from a friend 2. And happily, I managed to keep my hands off Pixia's tone balance adjustment function. (Though here I played a little bit with the colour intensity to make good for the fact that the scan was not quite as intensely coloured as the original piece). As for you, I sincerely doubt that you can only do blobs in traditional media! 12 Maybe your artistic self-criticism just takes over too much?"

She is adorable, with that sad look on her face...Autumn can be such beautiful season, but days like this I feel better if I may stay indoors! Don´t know what difference that would do in her case, though...*smiles*

:-) Helle Jorgensen replies: "That's a sweet comment. We're getting lots of rain where I live now, so autumn does seem to be just around the corner. The beautiful colours of the season aren't quite here yet; it'll be a while still. But I do like the melancholy of autumn weather. Of course, it's generally better when it is followed up by a cup of hot tea after coming back in! Poor mermaid, I don't know how she'd handle *that*. She'd have to hope for a ship to come by, I suppose."

Haha, I like it. Never seen anyting like it. Great idea and I like your use of colors.

:-) Helle Jorgensen replies: "Thanks! I do like how this one came out."
