SciFi and Fantasy Art: PossessedI realised that I have never drawn ectoplasm before, and I just had to give it a try. I had much fun with this piece, especially as a stylistic experiment. In the spirit of expanding my artistic repertoire a bit, I decided to ink the picture and go for a comparatively cleaner and more comic-like line than I usually work in. First I made a sketch with soft pencils (the all-time favourite medium of mine) – and after about a dozen changes and liberal use of the eraser, I was happy enough with the result to ink it and remove the messier pencilling. Afterwards I added a bit of watercolour to the background to make the motive stand out more clearly. |

Helle Jorgensen replies: "Oh, it must be all those twisting lines in the background that give a somewhat psychedelic effect. - Only an image from the seventies would most probably have been very brightly coloured, too. The ectoplasm and background wasn't very time-consuming in spite of all the linework. In fact it was the hands and arms that took most time - mainly because I used myself as a reference for the pose and had to do quite a bit of running to and from the mirror. Glad that you like the result!" | |
| 7 Jul 2006 | Hannah Schmidt 'Nomi' | Oooh, very creepy. I love it! Very well done! Helle Jorgensen replies: "Thanks! Creepy themes intrigue me; I find that they set off the imagination and hold lots of creative potential. Judging by your gallery you like the odd horror story or two, too!" | |
| 9 Jul 2006 | Virpi M. Hänninen | Interesting teknique! looks great, must have taken some time! Helle Jorgensen replies: "Thanks! Yes, it did take quite a bit of time, though how much exactly I am not sure, since I worked on it on and off over a couple of days. The timeconsuming part was to work out the motive in the pencil sketch - so that I'd gotten over the worst mistakes before the inking, which is a far less forgiving medium than graphite." | |
| 9 Jul 2006 | Lena *Hellen* Iachoukova | Eek… This picture scared me! But it’s something unusual for your style too. Nice work on the hands. Though they’re long again, and you shouldn’t have shown the legs then. I can suggest this method of checking hands: the elbow is usually on the level where the ribcage ends. I like this lineart despite it’s creepy! Helle Jorgensen replies: "Well, I'm delighted! Though, given that it's you speaking, shouldn't it be: "I like this lineart *because* it's creepy'? He he. As for your advice, you probably meant arms, not hands. (I do think the hands came out fairly well on this one.) In fact I am aware of the rule of thumb that the elbow should reach the lower edge of the ribcage to be of correct length. I admit that I fudged that up a bit on her right arm, where I had a bit of trouble getting the position right. (Obviously, using myself as a reference for the pose, I couldn't keep the position while drawing.) Still, it's a mistake that I keep making, so I should pay better attention to it. Thanks for commenting! " | |
| 12 Jul 2006 | Vincent James Bernardo | Wo! Lineart... Now that's something to be frightened about. The piece itself is quite fascinating considering the artist's favored mediums. I'm also impressed with your patience for drawing so much lines, but the first commentors already said that much. i sorta agree with Helena's comment about not showing the legs but for different reasons. In my opinion, it would add to the feel of the piece if you cannot see her legs because of the haze made by the smoke. Makes her look like she's covered in it. Anyway! Just one piece? You better upload some soon, my typing fingers are itchy for some commenting... Helle Jorgensen replies: "My linework is something to be scared about? Hm, how to interprete that? Anyhow, I think I'll try to do some more inked pieces to get some practice with the medium, so watch out. But brace yourself: I'm so busy offsite right now that in all probability there won't be new updates till August. Or at any rate, not many pictures. I'll let you know when something new is happening in my gallery, though. " | |
| 16 Jul 2006 | Anne .Inkeri.Anu Hänninen | Lol! Saw my sister got here before me...( Virpi, above.. ) No wonder though, I have not half the time I want´s to spend at this... Enough wining abpot that, over for the interesting part! Your pic... Love her fascial expression, and all of those lines...*stares again* I guess everyone else already said what I wanted to do....so....Great work! Hope to see more like this! Anne Helle Jorgensen replies: "Thanks! He he, as for the time issue that makes two of us, really . I wish I had more time for Elfwood, but currently I'm busy offsite. Hopefully I'll be able to pick up on it before too long." | |
| 12 Jul 2008 | Markus Röncke | Nice girl ^^ Helle Jorgensen replies: "Thanks. It was one of those felicitous instances when I got an idea for a motive a bit different from what I usually do. I’ll come round to your gallery and leave you some comments after my holiday; I’m just on my way out the door." | |
