SciFi and Fantasy Art: Entwife

As I imagine entwives they would be merry, well-rounded characters, as sweet and ripe as an apple.

This piece was done to alleviate the fact that it has been way too long since I last touched watercolours. Here's to shaping up and keeping in practice in the future!

Wooo! You updated! Honestly, while looking at the thumbnails in the newest additions section I didn’t expect to find you.
I must agree with the previous commenter – what a joyful picture!
I like the bird she’s holding. 2
By the way, what are entwives? I’m pretty sure I’ve never heard of these.

Um… There’s something wrong about her legs/roots. I can’t figure out if the character is sitting on the grass or walking(?) or what? If I were you, I would do the roots in a skirt-like form.

:-) Helle Jorgensen replies: "Yes, indeed, I finally updated! Furthermore, I plan to do so again within a couple of days; the next picture will hopefully reach my gallery in time for Christmas. I've been somewhat slow lately, so it's time to make up for that. As for entwives, they are creatures of J.R.R. Tolkien. They are the female counterparts of the ents (you probably know the ents - tree people - from the LoTR films?). This one is sitting down; think of her as rooted, so to speak. However, you should imagine that she could get up and walk whenever she wanted to, in which case her legs would look significantly longer once she got up 12! I did speculate quite a bit on how to make a properly person-like 'tree' anatomy. This is my first attempt, so perhaps there *is* room for improvement. I'm glad that you like the bird, I wasn't quite satisfied with it myself - I think it lacks a bit of detail, but then it *is* very small. "

Very cool entwife. I really like the joyfull nature of this picture.

:-) Helle Jorgensen replies: "Thanks! It looks like I've accomplished my mission with this picture 12"

Reading your explanation above made me think on how ents and entwives make entbabies. Plant entseeds? Anyway...

For first try on tree-people anatomy, it honestly looks good. Another cheery piece added under your belt. Great use of watercolors! As I mention a long time ago... This piece is simply great!

:-) Helle Jorgensen replies: "Hmm? I must admit that I've never really thought of that. Maybe they just breed by pollination? It's a funny idea with a seed ... I imagine that nursing would consist in watering the kids 12. "

So that's what they look like... No wonder Treebeard & co feel lonely. Very nice watercolours.

:-) Helle Jorgensen replies: "Thanks. Entwives probably come in all sorts and shapes, but I'm sure they are all beautiful."

yeah!! entwife!! I've been looking for one of those for a long time. Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever seen an ent in these woods either, so maybe you could do one of those next. I love the LotRs books, and I really wish the ents had found their entwives, but I suppose that would be a whole other story. Well drawn/painted, keep up the good work!

:-) Helle Jorgensen replies: "Thanks! I've seen a few ents (and even an entwife or two) around on Elfwood, but certainly not quite as many works as such interesting creature might merit."

yes, that’s exactly how I would picture them! Oh well, maybe in a few years, there will be enough Ent-pictures around to make a tour...

:-) Helle Jorgensen replies: "That’s always a compliment! I have in fact seen a few ent pictures around Elfwood, though not so many entwifes. If you’re longing to make a tour and don’t find enough ents to start off, perhaps the solution would be to include other tree people as well - dryads and so forth?"

Great "Apple" tour 1

:-) Helle Jorgensen replies: "Thanks! Isn’t it funny that we have both included the little chubby faery biting into a big green apple for tours that were published at the same time? I do believe that great minds think alike! (By the bye: I liked your ’fat is beautiful’ tour!"
11 Sep 2008:-) Anne Wipf
Hehe: yes I noticed it too. But it is a lovely picture (I think our tastes are similar 12 )

:-) Helle Jorgensen replies: "Yes: There’s no harm in such a pretty picture being on two tours. I noticed that for some other tours we both fell for ’the penguin reaper’, too. We *must* have similar tastes!"

Sorry, can’t resist. I guess now I know why she’s smiling. Did you see how handsome his enthusband turned out! 18 I guess the only one left is the entbaby...

:-) Helle Jorgensen replies: "Ha ha - great minds think alike! Actually, as soon as I noticed that big old tree winking at me on my forest walk, I knew that there I had an ent for my gallery, to match that lonely entwife. Ent babies? Hm, so that would be - seeds? Fruit? Sprouts? You’ve given me something to think about! Maybe, one day ... though I guess that first I have to think about a Christmas card, now that December is coming up 12"

:-) Helle Jorgensen replies: "Thank you very much for your comments! I’m glad that you like my pictures!"
